Cartier Watches: A History

Cartier is a company that is known for jewelry, leather goods and even bridal accessories but they are most proud of their watches. Louis Francois Cartier was a watch maker in France who loved pocket watches and had a dream of creating his own line of custom watches. When Patek Phillipe created the wristwatch, Cartier immediately loved it and helped to make it very popular. Eventually the entire world switched from pocket watches to wrist watches, in part due to the efforts of Louis Francois Cartier.

Alberto Santos-Dumont was a Brazilian airplane pilot and a friend of Louis Cartier. Santos-Dumont told Cartier that he could not use pocket watches during flight (because of the open cockpit and the wind) and asked Cartier to design a watch specifically for airplane pilots to use. Cartier did, and he named the design “Santos” after his friend. The Santos line of watches is still offered by Cartier today and is very popular. Many people who want the real Cartier Santos but cannot afford it find the identical design in a Cartier replica watch. The Santos line was first offered to the public in 1911.

Over time, Cartier’s sons and their sons built up the jewelry side of the business and kept pushing the Cartier name to new heights, but wrist watches always remained at the heart of the company. The Cartier company is very proud of their watch making history, they are one of the few luxury watch makers from France that are well known with a large market share. The Cartier replica watch is proof of the brand’s consistent desirability. Cartier is a fashion leader and shapes the styles of tomorrow. From the Tonneau in the early 1900’s to their current timepieces, Cartier watches have always impressed with their style and accuracy.
